Social communication is more than knowing what to say. It includes understanding others, sharing ideas, navigating conversations, interpreting social information, and communicating in ways that feel authentic and effective.
Our individual and group-based services support children and adults in developing practical communication skills for friendships, school, family life, and the broader community.
What Is Social Communication?
Social communication skills may include:
Initiating and maintaining conversations
Taking turns and staying engaged with others
Asking questions and sharing relevant information
Understanding nonverbal communication
Recognizing another person’s thoughts or perspective
Interpreting figurative or indirect language
Repairing communication breakdowns
Navigating friendships and group interactions
Advocating for personal needs and boundaries
Adjusting communication across different environments
Our Approach
We provide individualized, strengths-based support that respects each client’s personality, identity, communication style, and neurodiversity.
Our goal is not to encourage masking or impose rigid expectations of how someone “should” communicate. Instead, we help clients better understand social situations, express their needs, build authentic connections, and develop strategies that support confidence, independence, and self-advocacy.
Therapy is tailored to each person’s age, experiences, priorities, and real-life communication goals.
Social Communication Groups
When appropriate peer matches are available, small groups offer opportunities to practice communication skills in a supportive and engaging environment.
Groups may focus on:
Conversation and collaborative interaction
Friendship and relationship development
Participating in group activities
Flexible thinking and problem-solving
Self-advocacy and emotional communication
Navigating real-life social, academic, or workplace situations
Group placement is based on age, communication profile, interests, individual goals, and compatibility with available group members. An evaluation or consultation may be recommended before joining a group.
