Myofunctional Evaluations

A comprehensive myofunctional evaluation examines how the muscles of the mouth, tongue, lips, and jaw function during breathing, resting posture, speaking, chewing, and swallowing. Our specialized speech-language pathologists evaluate children and adults who may demonstrate mouth breathing, an open-mouth resting posture, tongue thrust, difficulty producing certain speech sounds, oral habits, restricted tongue movement, or concerns related to chewing and swallowing.

What Does the Evaluation Include?

The evaluation may include an assessment of:

• Tongue and lip strength, movement, and coordination

• Tongue resting posture and swallowing patterns

• Nasal versus mouth breathing

• Jaw stability and oral-motor function

• Speech sound production

• Chewing and feeding skills, when appropriate

• Oral habits, such as thumb-sucking or prolonged pacifier use

• Structural factors that may affect function

Following the evaluation, we will review our findings with you and provide personalized recommendations. When appropriate, we may also collaborate with your dentist, orthodontist, physician/pediatrician, ENT, or other members of your care team.
